Scotch Brite is the brand of 3M that is known worldwide, if only because of the yellow sponge with the green sanding area that can be found in every kitchen. A perfect example of a hand application. But Scotch Brite also has a whole range of products for the (heavy) industry and has many appearances. Scotch Brite has been developed to achieve a perfect end result and at the same time save costs through efficiency.
The technology developed by 3M for Scotch Brite products consists of a non-woven web construction. This web is composed of synthetic fiber wires that together form a flexible three-dimensional web. In this web there are abrasive grains and all this is held together by a synthetic resin.
The open structure reduces the risk of warping or discoloration because less heat is introduced. The open structure also prevents the abrasive material from flooding. This ensures a better and consistent finish and a long lifetime of the abrasive.
Because Scotch Brite is by definition more or less flexible, it is a perfect product to use when machining contours. It also greatly reduces the risk of costly repair work and unnecessary failure and rejection.
The flexible synthetic web is composed in such a way that abrasive is constantly in contact with the work surface. This creates an even, first-class surface without the need for prior sanding of the workpiece - taking critical tolerances into account.

Some specific recognizable 3M Scotch Brite products, from pressed unitzed EXL wheels to tyres, discs and brushes. Scotch Brite has many applications and versions.
3M is one of the most innovative manufacturers we know when it comes to sanding and grinding materials. A good product is always further developed into an even better product. Scotch Brite also offers more advantages than just excellent quality and a consistent finish compared to conventional abrasives. The biggest cost item in production is always labour costs. If you can reduce the number of steps in a process by working more efficiently, you can immediately see that back in time and therefore labour costs. Scotch Brite contributes to this vision:
Scotch Brite's Clean & Finish series includes the hand pads and rollers. The sanding minerals are closer together to ensure a consistent scratch pattern.
The flexibility makes these products suitable for machining difficult to reach places. Equally, a special coating ensures that the handpads have a longer service life. The Scotch Brite Handpads and rolls are available in two sizes: red for Very fine and grey for Ultra fine.
This series is more aggressive and suitable for all-round manual cleaning, finishing and light deburring. Ideal for pre-sanding lacquers and primers. This also ensures better adhesion of a coating.
The hand pads and rolls are available in various qualities, from Coarse to Ultra-fine.
Scotch-Brite Clean & Strip are nylon webs provided with minerals. Clean & Strip is an extremely aggressive web and has been developed for cleaning before and after welding, removing rust, paint and protective layers and for cleaning surface contamination. In 2019 3M launches the new series Clean & Strip XT-Pro and XT-Pro Extra Cut. A purple and green variant, which are even more aggressive and have a longer lifespan than their predecessors. The deformability of the disc provides a larger contact surface, allowing even faster work.
The purple Clean & Strip XT-Pro contains a sharp silicon carbide sanding mineral. Together with the newly developed web, this is a durable disc that does not attack the parent material during processing. Ideal for the removal of coatings, paint and light mill scale.
The green variant has been given the name XT-Pro Extra Cut and contains an aluminium oxide grain that quickly cuts to the bare metal. Ideal for cleaning, blending and preparing surfaces and removing heavy rust and rust pits without leaving cavities.

The EXL unitized products are also part of the Scotch Brite series. EXL products are intended for deburring and finishing without affecting the geometry of the workpiece. Again, the discs or wheels consist of a combination of abrasives and nylon fibres, held together by a resin joint. The web is cured and compressed and is available in different hardnesses. The harder, the more aggressive. A softer disc is less aggressive but leaves a nicer finish. They leave less streaks, which means the surface remains cleaner and less preparation is needed for the next steps. Here, too, the open web ensures that the abrasive does not fill up quickly.
EXL products are available with a silicon carbide or aluminium oxide grain. Silicon carbide is a very sharp grain that breaks easily and therefore performs well with little pressure. This mineral provides a fine finish.
An alumina grain is block-shaped and needs more pressure to break out and maintain its grinding action and has a long service life.
EXL products deliver consistent results and are reproducible. Due to the open web, little heat is introduced into the product.
A special product in the Scotch Brite range is the Bristle line, brushes and discs with moulded plastic threads that are extremely flexible and therefore ideal for machining complex shapes and contours. Due to the ceramic Cubitron grain, Bristle is also an aggressive product when it comes to removing weld discolourations and light deburring and a Bristle Disc has a long service life.
The 3M Bristle discs are available in various versions. Thin brushes that form one disc as a package with flanges, for use on an angle grinder or stationary machine. With a mandrel or roloc mount for use on the drill.
You can recognize the coarseness by the colour.
