On a powerfile, the 3M designation for belt sander, you attach a sanding belt or Scotch Brite belt for grinding or finishing various materials.
On tube grinders, use a sanding belt to pre-sharpen followed by a Scotch Brite or Trizact sanding belt for a nice consistent finish.
In the wood industry, the idea arose to use sanding belts to sand large boards. Until then, broad belts were used, but they had their limitations. The long belt machine provides the solution!
Parquet sanding is generally done with a parquet sander equipped with a sanding belt or a number of heads with sanding discs. In all cases, it is important to be able to work flat.
The handheld belt sander is mainly used in woodworking. With a coarse sanding grain, the belt sander is even used as a planer because of its tremendously fast material removal.
Klingspor sanding belts are used in various markets because of their industrial quality. As a long belt sanding belt, you often encounter Klingspor on the long belt sander.
Sanding belts from Deerfos are relatively unknown but have excellent sanding performance on metal and wood.

Scotch Brite™ is a well-known brand name of 3M and represents a non-woven web construction that is usually impregnated with an abrasive mineral.
Buying sanding belts - what to look for
In our advice, we are always guided by the speed with which a belt performs the desired processing. Of course, the end result must meet the set requirements.
Speed of work is always leading in our advice. The time it takes to complete an operation is many times more important within the total cost of ownership than the price of an abrasive belt.
Sanding belts for metal, steel or wood
The 3M 984F CubitronII sanding belt is qualitatively (read: speed!) one of the best belts currently available for machining Stainless Steel and Steel. This sanding belt works excellently under high pressure and the Prescision Shaped Grain, with its triangular pointed shape, ensures fast chipping and comparatively little heat input. The latter in turn is important to prevent discoloration of the Stainless Steel. The 3M 984F is a stiff band. If you prefer a more flexible belt, try the 947A grinding belt. This belt also performs well with medium pressure.
Wood has different properties and therefore requires a different type of abrasive belt. The Klingspor range contains a large number of belts that are especially suitable for wood.
Sanding belt for Lissmac machine
On a Lissmac machine goes a special sanding belt. We also call this a powerbelt, which are equipped with separate sanding blocks. These sanding blocks can be fitted with any sanding material imaginable. A combination of sanding cloth and sanding fleece is also possible. Depending on the desired finish, you determine which sanding product goes on your sanding belt. Metaaltechniek supplies sanding belts for the Lissmac machine with a quick clamping system.
The grit determines the material removal rate of the grinding belt
Roughly speaking, there are four types of grain, each with its own unique properties:
- Aluminum oxide, broadly applicable and relatively inexpensive.
- Silicon carbide, A very hard and sharp grain. Breaks out easily and is often used in fleece bonding.
- Zirconium grit, a tough but sharp grain that does need pressure to perform.
- Ceramic grit has a micro-crystalline structure and is hard, sharp and tough. The self-sharpening ability of grit keeps the sanding belt sharp for a long time. A special variant is the CubitronII Precision Shaped Grain from 3M.
